- Loch Leven, Kinross
- Scone Palace
- Queens View
- Blair Castle
- The Hermitage and waterfalls
We head north from Edinburgh via a stop to marvel at the engineering of the two, soon to be three crossings of the River Forth at South Queensferry. The picturesque town obtained its name from the ferry crossing over the Forth during the reign of Queen Margaret in the 11th century. The town has a charming cobbled main street with independent and boutique shops and provides an ideal setting for photographs of the river. It is then a short trip over the River Forth to see Loch Leven Castle. This medieval castle located on an island in the middle of the Loch was thought to be an ideal place for those who kept Mary Queen of Scots prisoner in 1567.
Heading further north we cross the silvery River Tay at Friarton Bridge which gives views of the Fair City of Perth which we will shortly visit. The city was known as a 'capital' of Scotland during the early years due to the royal courts. We have time available to wander around the city before making the short drive to visit Scone Palace, the stately home and coronation throne site of past Scottish Kings including Macbeth and Robert the Bruce. Scone Palace Chapel contains the replica Stone of Destiny, the stone was used as a coronation of the Scottish monarchs. Following the River Tay northwards, the picturesque Victorian town of Pitlochry is our next stop, where there is time to wander along the high street, or visit the Power Station where you will find the salmon observation chamber. While in Pitlochry, there is an option to visit Blair Atholl Distillery, home of Bell's Whisky. Further north and onto the beautiful Queen's View, with a stunning vista across Loch Tummel. A very short drive away is Blair Castle, built in 1269 and home to the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Our drive back to Edinburgh starts by making a stop at the charming village of Dunkeld to see the Cathedral and lastly we finish off with a short walk through the forest to see The Hermitage and cascading waterfalls.
